Obrenovac, 26th June 2007
The official ceremony of dwelling units opening and keys handover to the future tenants marked the completion of the project, started in November 2005, “Supporting the National Strategy for Resolving the Problems of Refugees and IDPs through Support for Individual living and Livelihood Enhancement" funded by the European Union and managed by the European Agency for Reconstruction and implemented by a German non-governmental humanitarian organization HELP-Hilfe zur Selbsthilfe e.V.. The project was implemented in the municipalities Obrenovac, Petrovac and Sremska Mitrovica.

With particular reference to Obrenovac, the project provides alternative solutions for refugees from Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina as well as IDPs from Kosovo, currently hosted in collective centre “PIM Ušce” through the provision of dwelling units and support of micro-business activities. Additionally, the project involved vulnerable cases belonging to local population contributing to the overall stability and poverty reduction in the region.
In cooperation with the municipality Obrenovac, which provided location and connection to the communal infrastructures, the project financed the construction works of 23 dwelling units in the amount of approximately 323,000.00 EUR. 23 dwelling units will provide durable housing solution for 19 refugee families from Obrenovac collective centre and 4 social vulnerable families which lost their houses due to floods and land slides. Integration within host community has been further strengthened with the provision of 20 hours communal work for local community by each working capable family member.

Furthermore, fifty business activities were supported through equipment and/or material donation in the average value of EUR 1,200 and provided with professional advice regarding business activities registration and other legal and management issues. Particularly, beneficiaries of this component are socially vulnerable: refugees, IDPs and local population, with sound business ideas to start or develop individual economic activities which would provide them with regular income.
Today HELP can announce that the project was successfully implemented and the good cooperation with the Donor, Serbian Commissariat for Refugees and Municipal Authorities assured the success of the intervention.
Speakers at the opening ceremony were representatives the European Agency for Reconstruction, the Commissariat for Refugees, the municipality Obrenovac and the organisation HELP – Hilfe zur Selbsthilfe e.V.
