May 2005.
For the last days the population of Banat , North East of Vojvodina Province has been struggling against severe floods brought by heavy rain and snow melting in Carpathian Mountins. The area adjacent to river Tamis, Nera, Karas, Moravica and Brzava has been damaged by extreme torrent that has endangered livelihoods of at least 20 000 inhabitants in several municipalities.
Last minute evacuation of whole villages prevented the loss of human lives , however the situation on the field is alarming since the whole economic activity likewise in the agricultural sector is heavily effected.
Municipality of Secanj , Zitiste, Bela Crkva and Plandiste are under proclamation of natural disaster alert. Initial reports from Secanj, the most directly stricken area, point the severe damage to Jasa Tomic, village at the very border with Romania , where over 200 houses have been either completely destroyed or severely damaged, a few thousand inhabitants displaced, bridges and electrical infrastructure damaged.
Directly flood affected farmland counts to up to more than 15 000 hectars (5000 hectars in Secanj, 8000 hectars in Bela Crkva and 3500 in Zitiste municipality) while additional 60 000 is in potential risk.
Jasa Tomic village, with 1200 houses in middle Banat county, Serbia , 3235 inhabitants and around 8000 ha of agricultural fields has been destroyed by the river Tamis. Flood has destroyed over 200 houses. Around 800 houses are sunk by the water of floating river. More than 2000 people has been evacuated and they are situated in villages Krajisnik, Secanj, Sutjeska and Boka. Hospital in the village has also been evacuated, and its patients (around 100 of them) are now in hospital in Zrenjanin. More then 3000 pigs are drown and about 500 cattle. All agricultural fields are under water, and the houses are still falling down. There is no electricity and gas. Water is not for human use. Surrounded by water, this village will be at least two months, as some experts claim.
Foreign Minister of Serbia and Montenegro Vuk Draskovic on 26 April called on the international community to help the victims of the flooding in the Banat region in northern Serbia .
The authorities expect that the water withdraw within 30-60 days from the village and only than there will be possible to estimate the damages more precisely.
HELP is taking part in assisting the flooded areas in Vojvodina and will deliver food, one truck and water pumps, for temporary use for all vulnerable population who lost their houses.
