Migrants/refugees assistance in Serbia

Since the beginning of the migrant crisis in Serbia Help provided coordinated and continuous assistance

In cooperation with the governmental and local authorities and organizations dealing with migrants/ refugees crises in Serbia, like Commissariat for refugees and migrations, Ministry of Labour, Employment, Veteran and Social Policy, and Serbian Red Cross.

Out of 17 centres for migrants/refugees in Serbia, Help renovated centres in Bogovadja, Bosilegrad, Pirot, Principovac in Sid and built one in Sombor. Accommodation capacities of the centres, including Tutin and Sjenica, were improved with 1,000 beds. More than 160 persons were engaged and seconded to the Commissariat for Refugees and Migration and Ministry of Social Welfare within the efforts to increase the capacities of governmental institutions in provision of basic services to the vulnerable refugees and migrants.
The Serbian Red Cross, in addition to providing them with six pre-owned vehicles, SRC’ soup kitchens in Sombor and Presevo were renovated and provided with professional appliances. Kitchen equipment was provided also for reception/asylum centres in Bogovadja, Divljane and Bela Palanka.

To support local communities affected by the migration flow, Help renovated health facilities in Kanjiza, Pirot, Sid, Sombor and Subotica, delivering also medical equipment to health centres, including Presevo, a municipality especially burdened with migrants. Seven used ambulance vehicles furnished with medical equipment were donated to Health centres in Bujanovac, Kanjiza, Pirot, Presevo, Sid, Sombor and Subotica.

From July 2015 until February 2017, Help provided assistance worth 4 million Euro for over 200,000 migrants/refugees on their way through Serbia. Project activities were financed by the German Federal Foreign Ministry (1,88 million EUR), the European Union (1 million EUR), the Federal Ministry for economic cooperation and development (875,000 EUR) and private donations (190,000 EUR).
